Scientists Calls For Regulatory Boards For Nigeria's Health Sector

Association of Medical  Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria ( AMLSN ) on Friday in Osogbo, Osun state capital, has demanded the reconstitution of Governing Boards of Health Regulatory Bodies in the country, saying since the boards were dissolved in 2015, activities of practitioners had lacked coordination.

National President of the association, Alhaji Toyosi Raheem, told Amiloaded shortly after the conclusion of a special general meeting of AMLSN, that the absence of regulatory bodies like Medical and Laboratory Scientists Council of Nigeria, Pharmacautical Council of Nigeria, and Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, amongst others, has led to total halt in the regulatory activities in the health sector.

Alhaji Raheem said practioneers should not be left to be practising without checks and demanded immediate reconstitution of the bodies to prevent avoidable calamities lack of regulations could cause the country, emphasizing that the creation of such department will promote quality assurance and quality management.

He also implored federal and state government to create department of Medical Laboratory Services in the Ministry of Health and Teaching Hospitals in line with the Nigerian National Laboratory Policy of 2007, while he also demanded compliance with court judgement and respect for professional autonomy quoting the FMC, ASABA VS AMLSN of 2013, JUTH MGT VS AMLSN of 2014, OAUTH VS AMSLN as examples.

Raheem, who declared his association's support for the JOHESU nationwide strike, posited that AMSLN decided to painfully join the strike action having realized that it is the language government understand.

He then called for the engagement of more medical laboratory scientists for the country to achieve expectations under the National Medical Laboratory Policy, as well as enable the professional body to oversee and coordinate quality management system and enhance quality laboratory service in PHCs.
